Dr. Edmund Simpson was born in San Francisco in 1912 and raised in Burlingame, California. After attending San Mateo Junior College and earning an AB in zoology from the University of California at Berkeley, he received an MD from McGill University in Montreal, where he studied internal medicine. Simpson practiced medicine in Sacramento from 1943-1969, then joined the staff at the University of California, Davis, Student Health Center in 1970. He retired in 1977, moving first to Pollack Pines, California, then to Placerville, California. At the time these papers were donated, he resided in Beaverton, Oregon. Simpson died October 6, 1990.
In 1956 Simpson bought a 6 x 10 hand press and began fine printing. He owned and operated the Blackwood Press in Placerville, CA, and was a member of the Book Club of California and the Roxburghe Club of San Francisco.
