Klumpkey, Julia, 1870-1961.

Hide Profile

Julia Klumpkey (1870-1961), violinist and composer, was a native of San Francisco. She attended the New England Conservatory of Music in 1894-1895 and received a diploma in violin performance in 1895. While at NEC, Klumpkey studied violin with Emil Mahr and Hermann Hartmann, and composition with Percy Goetschius. In Paris, Klumpkey studied violin with Maurice Hewitt and composition with Nadia Boulanger. Klumpkey also studied with other European masters including Eugene Ysaye (Brussels), Leopold Auer (Dresden), William Henley (London), and A. Dieudonne. Klumpkey served as head of the violin department at Converse College in South Carolina and performed with the Spartanburg Symphony Orchestra. It would seem that she spent the last few decades of her life back in San Francisco, where she died in 1961. In addition to her own accomplishments, Julia Klumpkey had very talented siblings including portrait painter Anna Elizabeth Klumpke (1856-1942), doctor Augusta (Dejirne), and astronomer Dorothea (Roberts) (1861-1942).
