The position of executive vice chancellor was created in 1995 by Chancellor Michael K. Hooker to serve as the chancellor's chief of staff, coordinating daily activities of the chancellor's office and serving as advisor, planner, and troubleshooter on matters across campus. In addition to handling routine management functions of the chancellor's office, the executive vice chancellor oversaw the divisions of Business and Finance (including Auxiliary Services, Facilities Services, and Human Resources), Student Affairs, and University Advancement as well as the area of information technology. Elson S. Floyd served as executive vice chancellor from September 1995 until his resignation in July 1998. The vacant post was not filled, and the position was later eliminated.
