Paul Tufts was born in 1924 in Yakima, Washington. He studied music at Yakima Valley Junior College, Cornish School in Seattle, and the University of Washington, where he studied composition with George McKay and earned his M.A. He joined the faculty at the University of Washington in 1958, where he taught theory and composition. He retired in 1989 and died in 2004.
