Elmer C. Birney was born on March 26, 1940 in Satanta, Kansas. He earned his B.S. in 1963 and an M.S. in 1965 from Fort Hays State University. In 1970, he earned his Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Kansas. After completion of his Ph.D., Professor Birney joined the faculty of the University of Minnesota. Dr. Birney was a professor and director of graduate studies in the Department of Ecology, Evolution and Behavior. In addition, professor Birney served as the curator of mammals and director of the Bell Museum of Natural History. Dr. Birney died June 11, 2000.
