Before 1979 UFCW Local 179 was a local of the Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workmen of North America. The local changed its name after the formation of the UFCW when the Amalgamated Meat Cutters merged with the Retail Clerks International Union and the Boot and Shoe Workers Union. Local 179 bargained with United Refrigerated Services, Inc. and Wilson & Company, Inc. Wilson & Company became Continental Deli Foods in 1988.
