E. Reeve Hitchner, native of New Jersey, joined the faculty of the University of Maine in 1922 following his earlier graduation from Pennsylvania State College with a Master of Science degree in bacteriology. In 1931 he was awarded the Ph.D. degree by the University of Wisconsin. Following his original appointment as Assistant Professor at the University of Maine, he assumed increasing responsibility until in 1933 he was appointed Head of the Department of Bacteriology and Professor of Bacteriology. He remained in this responsibility until his retirement in 1959. At the time of his retirement the academic building housing bacteriology, biochemistry and poultry science was named Hitchner Hall in recognition of his leadership, scholarliness and contributions to Maine and its people. He died in 1972.
