Dr. Adickes taught English in Harlem when she volunteered to teach in Freedom Schools in Virginia (1963) and Mississippi (1964). She raised funds and recruited other teachers to participate. While in Hattiesburg, she attempted to integrate the public library and the Kress store. She sued Kress in a case that was heard by the U.S. Supreme Court. She donated the cash settlement to support the educational ambitions of workers in the Civil Rights Movement.
