Peter J. Donofrio is a founding member of the Society of Civil War Surgeons, Inc. At Civil War re-enactments, Donofrio assumes the role of Samuel Mitchell Smith.

Samuel Mitchell Smith was born in Greenfield, Ohio on November 28, 1816. He was the son of pioneers, Samuel and Nancy Mitchell Smith. Smith attended Miami University and graduated with a B.A. in 1836; he received his M.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1839. He held many important positions from professor to physician, and notably Surgeon General of Ohio, throughout a lifetime of commitment to sound medical practice.
