William John Jorden (b. 1923) was a reporter, writer, and a diplomat. He was a foreign correspondent with the New York Times from 1952 to 1961. He joined the State Department in 1961, as a member of the Policy Planning Council, 1961 to 1965. He served as Special Assistant to the Under Secretary for Political Affairs on the Policy Planning Council, 1962 to 1965, and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs on the Policy Planning Council, 1965 to 1966. From 1966 to 1968 and 1972 to 1974 he was a Senior Staff Member of the National Security Council, and from 1968 to 1969 he was a member and spokesman of the American delegation to the Vietnam Peace Talks in Paris. He served as Assistant to former President Lyndon Johnson from 1969 to 1972, and he was U.S. Ambassador to Panama, 1974 to 1978. He wrote a book entitled Panama Odyssey, which was published in 1984.
