Born in 1898 in North Carolina; educated at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (Ph.D.); professor of English in colleges in West Virginia and Tennessee, 1926-1944; colorful professor of English and chairman of the Division of Language and Literature at the University of Southern Mississippi, 1944-1963; died 1965.
