M. E. Kerr (pseud. of Marijane Meaker) earned a B. A. from the University of Missouri, Columbia. She was a volunteer in a writing program in New York City high schools, during which time she met the girl who would become the protagonist of her award-winning Dinky Hocker Shoots Smack! She has also won awards for other books, such as Gentlehands, Little Little, and Night Kites.

M. E. Kerr, the pseudonym of Marijane (Agnes) Meaker, was born May 27, 1928, in Auburn, New York. She received a Bachelor of Arts from the U. of Missouri in 1949 and began working as a freelance writer. She published her first novel, Dark Intruder under the name Vin Packer, in 1952, and also published adult non-fiction works under the name Ann Aldrich. In 1972 she published her first book for young adults, Dinky Hocker Shoots Smack under the pseudonym M. E, Kerr. Since them M. E. Kerr has become one of the most popular and highly respected authors in American juvenile literature. Critics praised her as a brilliant and original writer and keen social observer who is not afraid of controversial subjects, and whose books address serious issues in as manner both incisive and entertaining. Critics have also lauded her books for the color and variety of her characterizations, and note that several of her novels are acknowledged landmarks of young adult literature. She continues to publish works for young adults, including the 'Fell' series dealing with the adventures of teenage detective John Fell. She also published Me, Me, Me, Me, Me in 1983, detailing her own teenage years and how many of the people and events from this period found their ways into her novels. She has received several awards for her books and continues to write books for young adults.
