Morgan Coleman was born about 1556, studied at Oxford and Gray's Inn, sat in the 1597 Parliament, and served in succession Lord Willioughby de Eresby, Lord Keeper Sir John Puckering, Lord Keeper Sir Thomas Egerton, and Robert Cecil Earl of Salisbury. In 1611 Coleman proposed a plan for reducing the expenditures of the Royal Household, which made him unpopular at Court. In 1622 he provided genealogies for King James I, and described himself in the present manuscript as "a pore decayed gent. one of the fraternitie of His Majestie's hospitall at the Charterhouse....".
