Fort Gibson, Oklahoma (1824-1857), established to contend with the Osage Indians.
Fort Smith, Arkansas (1817-1871), established to protect the Indian lands from white settlers and to restrain the Indians. It was occupied until 1824, when troops were moved to Fort Gibson, and again in 1833. Used by Confederate troops 1861-1863.
