The Office of the President of UAB was created in 1969 when the University of Alabama in Birmingham became an independent institution within the framework of the University of Alabama System. The president of UAB has executive administrative responsibility for UAB programs and overall responsibility for financial matters relating to University affairs. The president of UAB is also responsible for strategic planning initiatives. Dr. J. Rudolph Davidson served as an assistant to UAB presidents Joseph F. Volker and S. Richardson Hill during the 1970s and 1980s. In this position, Davidson lobbied the state legislature for funds for UAB.
