He was appointed Assistant Professor at Wesleyan College, Middletown, Connecticut (1929-38), Associate Professor at the University of Minnesota (1938-47), and Full Professor from 1947-70, when he retired. Pattison's field was Romance Languages with a special interest in Peninsular Spanish Literature and Spanish Syntax. He was an expert on the Spanish novelist, Benito Pérez Galdós.

Walter Pattison was born in Chicago, Illinois on January 5, 1903 and received his early education in the Chicago area. He attended Harvard University and obtained a B.S. degree in 1925, M.A. in 1926 and Ph.D. in 1931. He also did additional graduate studies at the University of Minnesota from 1926-1928 and Ecole des Chartes in 1933-1934.
He was appointed Assistant Professor at Wesleyan College, Middletown, Connecticut, 1929-1938 and Associate Professor at the University of Minnesota from 1938-1947. Pattison became a Full Professor in 1947 at the University of Minnesota and served in this position until his retirement in 1970.
Professor Pattison's field was Romance Languages with a special interest in Peninsular Spanish Literature, and Spanish Syntax. He also taught elementary and intermediate Spanish and French courses, as well as French Literature. Walter Pattison died in 1992.
