The National Organization of Women was organized in 1966 in Washington, D.C. The group's stated purpose was "to take action to bring women into full participation in the mainstream of American society now, exercising all the privileges and responsibilities there of in truly equal partnership with men." Early efforts to establish N.O.W. in North Dakota commenced in the early 1970s. Early chapters included Grand Forks (1972), Fargo (1973) and Bismarck-Mandan (1975). Other ND chapters have included Bottineau, Dickinson, Devils Lake, Jamestown and Minot. Some of the issues in which North Dakota N.O.W. members were active included: poverty and women; displaced homemakers; public transportation; affirmative action and Title IX; rural women; battered wives; rape; human rights commission; reproductive rights commission; Equal Rights Amendment.
