D.D. Pittman served 30 years in the military from July 7, 1898, until July 27, 1921. He served as the Chief Telegraph Officer and Cashier with the U.S. Army Signal Corp at Fort Gibbon and Valdez, Alaska between June 1912 and March 1917. Fort Gibbon was the detail headquarters and distributing point of the U.S. military telegraph and cable service. He died in 1958 at the age of 83.
