Governor of Michigan (1859-1861).

Born in Springport, N.Y., June 3, 1815; had only common school education; worked on parent's far came to Lapeer Co., Mich., and bought a farm, 1837; moved to Pontiac and began to study law and was admitted to the bar, 1841; became prosecuting attorney at Lapeer; Governor of Mich., 1859-61; served in Civil war as colonel of the 22nd Reg.
