Andrew Jacobs was born in Clinton, Louisiana, a son of Elvira Elizabeth Nettles and Richard Jacobs, formerly of Philadelphia. At the age of about six, his family and other Nettles family members moved to Girard, Richland Parish, Louisiana, where he grew up. He attended Louisiana State University during 1871-1872. Throughout his adult life, Jacobs was employed by railroad companies. His first railroad service was with the Clinton and Port Hudson Railroad, and he was conductor on the first Pullman car that ran from Cincinnati to New Orleans. Jacobs was subsequently employed by the Louisville and Nashville (L&N) Railroad for 40 years, during which time he was chief clerk in the office of the Superintendant of the New Orleans and Mobile Division. Jacobs wed Adelaide Elizabeth Bohne in 1881; they had five daughters.
