Nunzio "Joe" Palladino, born on November 10, 1916, in Allentown, Pennsylvania, received bachelor's and master's degrees in mechanical engineering from Lehigh University in 1938 and 1939. From 1939 to 1959, Palladino worked for the Westinghouse Electric Corp. Between 1950 and 1959, he headed the Westinghouse team that designed the reactor cores both for the submarine Nautilus and the nation's first full-scale nuclear electric generating plant at Shippingport. He steered the Nuclear Regulatory Commission through the troubled times following the 1979 nuclear accident at Pennsylvania's Three Mile Island power plant until June 30, 1986. He retired to private life in State College where he died at the age of 83 in December, 1999.
