Edwin Bernard Matzke (1902-1969) was a member of the Board of Managers of the New York Botanical Garden from 1958 until his death in 1969. He was Chair of the Scientific Committee from 1962-1969. He bequeathed his library to the New York Botanical Garden. Matzke was a respected educator, serving on the faculty of the Departments of Botany and Biological Sciences at Columbia University from 1929-1966, the years from 1958 to 1966 as Chair. He wrote an informal history of the study of Botany at Columbia. His research field was cellular morphology and he worked with cell structures in animals and minerals as well as plants. Many of his students became research colleagues under his tutelage. Matzke also edited a volume of reproductions of ancient maps. Matzke was born in Bronx, NY and lived there his entire life. He attended Columbia University on a Regents Scholarship. Aside from his work at Columbia, he also taught at Fordham University and was active in the Torrey Botanical Club. He died at home on Sept. 28, 1969.
