PCUS mission work in Korea began in 1892 and worked cooperatively with PCUSA missionaries in the southwestern provinces establishing churches, schools and hospitals. There was a strong emphasis on founding medical institutions and work with lepers. The mission was extremely successful, and Presbyterian membership grew despite interference from the Japanese early in the century and again during the disruptions of World War II and the Korean War. Mission work resumed in the 1950s; additional educational and medical facilities were established by the PCUS missionaries while the indigenous church assumed a greater role in the evangelical side of mission work. The PCUS Korea Mission ceased to exist in 1983 when its work was merged into that of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).
