Leon Ladner was born in Ladner, B.C. He was educated in New Westminster and then attended the University of Toronto, where he received his B.A. in 1907 and LL.B. in 1909. He was admitted to the B.C. bar in 1910. Ladner was elected to the House of Commons as Liberal-Conservative MP for Vancouver South in 1921, 1925 and 1926. Ladner returned to private law practice in 1930, founding Ladner, Carmichael, & Downs. In the 1950s Ladner was involved in the debate over the potential diversion of the Columbia River and in 1957 he was appointed to the Royal Commission on Energy. An original member of the Convocation of the University of British Columbia held in Victoria in 1912, Ladner became an active supporter of the institution. He provided the funds to build the Clock Tower (1969) and endowed scholarships.
