Elmer Harvey Bone was born in Martins Ferry, Ohio on January 15, 1885. When he was two years of age his family moved to Wellsburg, West Virginia. Mr. Bone was 16 years old when he was graduated from high school. He had acquired an early interest in photography and at 17 years of age had his own photography studio in a small building his father built for him. While in Wellsburg he also worked as a freelance photographer and submitted photos to both the Pittsburg and Cleveland newspapers.
Prior to 1925 Bone moved to Eustis, Florida, and then, in 1925, moved to Gainesville. There, he worked in the partnership of Van Sickel and Bone. Bone later opened his own studio. Bone was an active photographer for most of his long life. He "retired" when he was eighty-three years old but continued to photograph events in Gainesville such as the annual University of Florida Homecoming Parade. He died at age ninety on March 13, 1976.
