Mouton, Emma Kitchell Gardner, 1819-1897

Emma Kitchell Gardner was born in New York City on August 9, 1819, and was reared in Washington, D.C. She married Senator Alexander Mouton of Louisiana on January 25, 1842, with whom she had six surviving children and ten grandchildren. She died at Lafayette, La., on March 3, 1897.

Alexander Mouton was a representative for Lafayette Parish in the Louisiana Legislature (1828-1837), a U.S. Senator for Louisiana (1837-1842), governor of Louisiana (1842-1846), and president of the Louisiana state secession convention in 1861. He first married Celestine Zelia Rousseau with whom he had 13 children before her death. He next married Emma Kitchell Gardner with whom he had six children.
