Fort Laramie (Wyo.)
Important frontier post, located in eastern Wyoming on the Laramie River near its junction with the North Platte. Established 1834 as a fur-trading post, originally named Fort William. Rebuilt 1841 and renamed Fort John. Purchased by U.S. government 1849 and developed into an Army post to protect the Oregon Trail. Abandoned as a military fort 1890.
