Anne E. Smith, Ph.D., played a dominant role during the middle years of the Twentieth Century in the development of the Public Health Nursing program in New Mexico and adjacent states, and in exposing and correcting misconceptions on the part of many Native Americans as to the nature and home treatment of tuberculosis and diseases of childhood.

Anne M. Smith, Ph. D., wife of Eastburn R. Smith, was a professor at the University of New Mexico in the Division of Government Research. In 1966, she prepared a report for the New Mexico State Planning Office on the condition of Native Americans in New Mexico. She was also involved in the development of the Public Nursing Program in New Mexico and a program for the treatment of disease, in particular tuberculosis.
