Knudsen was born in Rigby, Idaho to a family in the restaurant business. She married A. Clark Knudsen in 1978 and had two children. She lived in Utah and Alabama, and worked as an interior decorator, florist, aerobics instructor, and school teacher. When she submitted this project, Knudsen was preparing to graduate from Brigham Young University in English and planning to attend graduate school at Utah State University.
