Elijah Averett was born in Maury, Tennessee, on December 12, 1810. He moved to Illinois and joined the Mounted Volunteers of Illinois in 1832, and served in the Black Hawk War. On his return he joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and moved to Missouri in 1836. Averett and his family were expelled with the Mormons from Missouri. Averett led one of Stephen Markham's pioneer companies and traveled to Salt Lake City, later settling in Manti, Utah. Averett and his twin brother, Elisha, worked as stone masons and helped build the Salt Lake, Manti, and St. George Temples. Averett died in Springville, Arizona, on September 2, 1886.
