The First Regiment of South Carolina infantry was organized by S.C. Governor F.W. Pickens in December 1860 or January 1861. Upon the formation of the Confederate government this regiment was mustered into Confederate service and Company H was mustered in on May 24, 1861 at Sullivan's Island, S.C. Although organized as an infantry regiment, it converted to an artillery regiment in all but name only when assigned to defend Fort Moultrie and Sullivan's Island in 1861. It was later designated as the 3rd South Carolina Artillery (but also known as the 1st and 2nd S.C. Artillery). In 1863 and 1864 Company H was stationed at Battery Bee on Sullivan's Island near Fort Moultrie. The company was engaged in both attacks by the Union ironclad fleet (April 7, 1863 and September 8, 1863).
