Maryland Heritage Committee

Hide Profile

The Maryland Heritage Committee was appointed by the governor in 1982 (Senate joint resolution 45) to develop and coordinate statewide celebrations commemorating Maryland's 350th anniversary (March 25, 1634). The committee was composed of representatives from the office of the governor, Genral Assembly, Maryland Historical Trust, Hall of Records Commission, St Mary's City Commission, Maryland Commission on Artistic Property, Department of Economic and Community Development, Maryland Historical Society, Maryland Committee for the Humanities, and the private citizens.

Heritage committees were appointed in each of the counties and Baltimore City by early 1983, and outlines of county programs were sent to the Maryland Heritage Committee for review and grant funding of activities and events. Celebrations planned by the committee were held throughout 1984, including ceremonies commemorating the landing of the Ark and Dove, the first session of the Maryland General Assembly, the granting of the charter of Maryland on June 20, 1632, the bicentennial of the ratification of the Treaty of Paris in Annapolis on January 14, 1784, and the bicentennnial of George Washington's resignation as Commander-in-Chief of the army which took place in Annapolis on December 23, 1783. The Maryland Heritage Committee was disbanded in June 1985.
