Frank Carlson, the son of Swedish immigrants, was born on his father's farm near Concordia, Kansas, in January of 1893. It was near Concordia where Carlson grew up and attended school. Later, Carlson graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in agriculture. When the United States entered WWI, Carlson enlisted as a private. Upon his returen, he bought a farm near Concordia. Carlson first entered politics in 1928, winning a seat in the Kansas House of Representatives. He was re-elected in 1930. In 1934, Carlson ran for and won a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Carlson first ran for the governor's office in 1946, winning that election and was re-elected in 1948. Later, he filled a vacated seat in the U.S. Senate. Carlson was the most successful and diverse politician in Kansas history, having served in the Kansas House, governor's office, and both houses of Congress. In all, he ran for office thirteen times and won each election.
