Charles Weer Goff, orthopedic surgeon, anatomist, and archaeologist, was born in Illinois in 1897. After receiving his M.D. in 1923 from the University of Illinois, he moved to Connecticut. He was a member of the clinical faculty of the Yale School of Medicine from 1949 to 1965 and served as an orthopedic advisor to several hospitals in New Haven and Hartford counties. In 1945, Goff began archeological research, especially the study of Christopher Columbus and the indigenous peoples of Central and South America. Combining his orthopedic, forensic, and archaeological knowledge to analyze osseous remains, he claimed to demonstrate in 1959 that Columbus's remains were located in Santo Domingo and that the body in the Tomb of Columbus in Seville was that of his son, Diego. Goff died in 1975.
