Flood, Jean Garis, 1914-2001

Jean Allyn Garis was born on April 2, 1914 in Summit, New Jersey to Norman S. Garis, a printer, and Jesse Allyn Wells Garis. After graduating from Summit High School in 1931 she entered Mount Holyoke College and graduated in 1935 with honors in English. In 1935-1936 she completed graduate studies in Religious and Social Education at Pendle Hill school in Wallingford, Pennsylvania. She worked on a book about religion by Mount Holyoke professor Mary Hussey and served as Director of a Young Women's Christian Association Stay at Home camp before marrying Harold Dinsmore Flood, a Methodist Episcopal minister on October 20, 1936. They had three children. After her marriage she engaged in various volunteer projects including assuming the presidency of both Church Women United in Reading, Pennsylvania and The Philadelphia Minister's Wife Association. She also wrote stories and poems that were published in several periodicals. She died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 25, 2001 at the age of eighty-seven.
