Charles and Charles L. Babbitt were father and son who lived and worked in Taunton, MA. The father, Charles Babbitt (1786-1854), was a skilled metalsmith who established a gold and silversmith business by 1810. Later,he made watches and clocks as well; he was especially noted for his fine tall case clocks. Babbitt also sold jewelry, fine tools, sporting goods, and hardware. He was among the first men to design and build machines that produced copper shells for percussion caps for firearms. Circa 1830, he invented a cast steel hone for making fine-edged razors.

After completing his education, his eldest son, Charles Leonard Babbitt (1813-1866), joined his father in the watch and jewelry making business and continued it after his father's death in 1854. Later, Charles L. suffered from rheumatism which ultimately left him bedridden.
