Brother and business partner of Leopold Strauss in the firm of Strauss & Co., wholesale grocers and commission merchants of South Carolina; the Strauss brothers immigrated from Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany; the firm operated in Bennettsville and Clio (Marlboro County, S.C.), and Charleston, S.C.; the original partnership dissolved in Apr. 1882 and was thereafter headed by Simon Strauss with his main office in Charleston, S.C.
