Dr. Adelbert Grant Fradenburgh (1868-1936) was born on a farm near Point Peninsula, New York. As a youngster, his family moved to the town of Oil, Pennsylvania. Fradenburgh attended Oil City High School and went on to earn his B.A. from Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa., in 1886. While in college, he took up fencing and became a tennis champion. Fradenburgh did some postgraduate work at Johns Hopkins and earned his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 1894 where he played football. Fradenburgh began his career as an educator by teaching in the economics department at Lake Forest University from 1894 to 1896. He became Assistant Professor of history and politics at Adelphi College in Brooklyn becoming full professor in 1900. In 1920, Dr. Fradenburgh became head of the Brooklyn evening session of City College. Under his administration, enrollment would increase and he soon became a propronent of establishing a separate Brooklyn College. In 1929, he became Dean of hte Brooklyn Center of City College. Once Brooklyn College was established, Dr. Fradenburgh was tapped to become the first Dean of Brooklyn College, which he did from 1930 to 1932. He resigned to continue as chariman of the college's history department.
