Little is known about Gertrude Winifred Devey beyond what can be ascertained from her student record and from the contents of the collection described here. She was born in about 1895 and was educated at High Pavement Secondary School, Nottingham. She entered University College Nottingham (now the University of Nottingham) in 1913 as a full time student. She studied for an Intermediate Arts course specialising in French. She graduated as an external student of the University of London in 1916 with a B.A. Honours degree in Modern Languages. On her marriage, her name subsequently changed to Hartshorne.
In 1915, Devey was living at 25 Alberta Terrace in Nottingham while at college; her home address was 19 Whitehall Street, Shrewsbury. Annie and Nellie Devey, presumably sisters, shared the same addresses.
