The position of Exhibitions Coordinator was created as part of the Office of the Registrar, National Museum of American Art, in 1987. In 1993 the function of this office was moved under the Department of Design and Production under the title Supervisory Exhibits Specialist. In 1994 the title was renamed Exhibitions Project Coordinator. By 2002 the Department of Design and Production was later named the Exhibitions Office. The title of Exhibitions Project Coordinator was renamed the Exhibitions Manager in 2005 and is currently part of the Office of the Director. The Exhibitions Manager is responsible for the organization of checklists, vouchers, other paperwork associated with exhibitions, and interoffice communications concerning exhibitions.
Margy P. Sharpe held the position from 1987 to 1990, and Katherine McCleery was Exhibitions Coordinator, 1991-1992. Anthony R. Giuffreda was Supervisory Exhibits Specialist, 1993, and Exhibitions Project Coordinator, 1994-2004. Marie Elena Amatangelo was the Exhibitions Coodinator, 2004-2005, and Exhibitions Manager, 2005- .
