Johnston, the fourth of five children, was born in New Castle, Delaware in 1976 to Carl and Karen Johnston. At six years of age, Johnston's mother began treatment for cancer. After spending much time alone with her, she passed away in October of 1983. In 1985 Johnston's father, seeking a suitable mother for his young children, met and married a woman by the name of Laura, a German native who had immigrated to the United States in 1970 to attend Brigham Young University. Johnston himself later attended the same university.
