Connecticut Mohegan leader.

In 1758 Johnson entered Eleazar Wheelock's school for Indians, then located in Lebanon, Conn., and in 1766 or 7 left to become a teacher among the Iroquois. Condemned as a drunkard by Wheelock in 1769, Johnson spent two years at sea and in Providence, R.I., before his conversion in 1771. Johnson, who then became a minister and missionary, was instrumental in arranging the 1775 emigration of New England Christian Indians to the Brotherton settlement on Oneida lands in New York.
