Represented are three generations of the Ludwell family of "Green Spring," James City County, Va., including Philip Ludwell I (b. 1638?), member of the Virginia Governor's Council and House of Burgesses, and later governor of the Carolinas; Philip Ludwell II (1672-1727), member of the Virginia House of Burgesses and Governor's Council, commissioner appointed to survey the Virginia-North Carolina boundary, and Auditor General of Virginia; and Philip Ludwell III (1716-1767), member of the Virginia House of Burgesses from Jamestown, Va., and later a member of the Governor's Council. Also represented is the Lee family, including Francis Lightfoot Lee (1734-1797) of "Menokin," Richmond County, Va., revolutionary statesmen; Henry Lee (1756-1818), revolutionary military leader; Philip Ludwell Lee (1727-1775) of "Stratford," Westmoreland County, Va., member of the Virginia House of Burgesses and Governor's Council; Richard Henry Lee (1732-1794) of "Chantilly," Westmoreland County, revolutionary statesmen; and William Lee (1739-1795), merchant and diplomat.
