Herbert Bemerton Battle (1862-1929) was born on May 29 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, the son of Dr. Kemp Plummer and Martha Ann Battle. He graduated from the University of North Carolina with his B.S. in 1881 and his Ph.D. in 1887. Battle was an original member and Vice President of the Alabama Anthropological Society, founded in 1909. He married Alice Matilda Wilson in 1885.
