In September of 1967 Ernest Gordon Bice was chief meteorologist for the United States Weather Bureau in Brownsville, Texas during the onslaught of Hurricane Beulah. Bice led a team of meteorologists in reporting storm conditions without leaving his post although all communication with his family had been severed. In 1968 Bice was awarded a United States Department of Commerce Gold Medal and inducted into the Hall of Honor for extraordinary service and dedication. Active in the field of genealogy, Bice researched variations of the family name including Buis, Buise, and Byas. He also performed extensive research into the lineage of his wife, Marie Henderson Bice. Several original documents in the collection relate to the lineage of Marie Henderson Bice and date from the early 1800s. Mr. Bice received and answered hundreds of genealogy reference requests from correspondents.
