The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) Library was established in 1973, the first year students were admitted to the new university. The first Dean of Libraries (then called the Director of Libraries) was Dr. Michael Kelly, who served from the Library's inception in 1973 until his retirement in 2005.
The Library's first location was in the Koger Center's Goliad Building, where it remained until its temporary move into the University gymnasium in 1975. The Library moved to its permanent home, the John Peace Library, in 1976. A second branch of the library at the UTSA Downtown campus opened in 1999. The Archives unit of the Archives and Special Collections department is located at the Institute of Texan Cultures in downtown San Antonio.
Prior to his coming to UTSA, Dean Michael Kelly taught at the University of Kentucky College of Library Science. During his tenure as Library Dean, Kelly also served as interim dean of fine arts in the early 1980s, interim director of the Division of Architecture and Interior Design in 2000, and parliamentarian of the Faculty Senate and Graduate Council until the end of 2005.
