LDS Church missionaries first arrived in New Zealand in 1854. Mission work with the country's European residents was largely unsuccessful, but the native Maori people proved especially receptive to the Church's message. This success brought the headquarters of the Australasian Mission from Sydney, Australia, to Auckland, New Zealand in 1879, and by 1880 the missionaries began focusing their proselyting efforts almost exclusively on the Maori. They baptized the first Maori in October of 1881, and completed a Maori translation of the Book of Mormon by 1889. This concentrated effort on the conversion of Maori people led to rapid Church growth in New Zealand at the end of the 19th century.
