Haney was drafted into the army in 1944, at the age of 32. He was subsequently placed as a paratrooper (private first-class) in Company B of the 193rd glider infantry of the 17th Airborne Division. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge, and was eventually killed during active service in a glider crash in Germany on March 24, 1945. He earned two purple hearts and the bronze star for his performance in World War II.
