The State Soil Conservation Committee was established by a legislative act in 1937 (1937 Laws of N.M., Chp. 219, Sec. 4). In 1965 a legislative act abolished the State Soil Conservation Committee and established the State Soil and Water Conservation Committee (1965 Laws of N.M., Chp. 137, Sec. 4 and 27). In 1973 a legislative act replaced the State Soil and Water Conservation Committee with the Natural Resource Conservation Commission (1973 Laws of N.M., Chp. 324, Sec. 3). In 1977 a legislative act established the Natural Resources Department and replaced the Natural Resource Conservation Commission with that Department's Soil and Water Conservation Commission (1977 Laws of N.M., Chp. 254, Sec. 1 and 8). In 1987 a legislative act abolished the Natural Resources Department and transferred the Soil and Water Conservation Commission to the newly-established Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department (1987 Laws of N.M., Chp. 234, Sec 79 and 83). The Soil and Water Conservation Commission works in conjunction with the Soil and Water Conservation Bureau to supervise and coordinate the conservation of soil and water in New Mexico.
