William Greenleaf Eliot (1811-1887), chaplain and officer of the Western Sanitary Commission in St. Louis during the Civil War. He also helped found and later became president and chancellor of Washington University in St. Louis. Horatio A. Lamb (1850-1926), dry goods merchant in Boston and president of the Boston Children's Aid Society. Hannah Eliot Lamb (1809-1899), William's sister, was very active in the Civil War by soliciting for and shipping provisions to her brother. Dorothea Dix (1802-1887), General Superintendent of Nurses of Military Hospitals in the United States for the Western Sanitary Commission during the War.
